Global Earthquake Count Set to Exceed Nine This Week

More than nine earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 or higher are expected to be recorded worldwide during the week of May 18 to May 24, according to standard global seismic tracking used by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Earthquakes at or above magnitude 5.5 are considered significant and can cause damage when they occur near populated areas, though many take place in remote regions or beneath the ocean. The final count will depend on reviewed seismic data, including any later revisions to magnitude estimates or delayed reporting of events.

The USGS Earthquake Hazards Program is expected to serve as the primary reference for the global tally, with data reviewed through the end of the monitoring period and updated as necessary after the final day.
