PSD Poised for Role in New Romanian Government

Romania’s Social Democratic Party is widely expected to be included in the country’s next government as party leaders and other political forces move to stabilize the political situation after the May 5 no-confidence vote that brought down the sitting cabinet. Negotiations over the shape of a new governing coalition are likely to center on parliamentary arithmetic, ministerial portfolios and efforts to secure a working majority in the legislature.

If the PSD joins the next administration, it would mark another return to the center of power for one of Romania’s largest and most influential political parties. Any new government will still need to win a vote of confidence in Parliament and complete the formal swearing-in process before taking office, but current talks suggest the Social Democrats are well positioned to secure cabinet representation in the next coalition.
