De la Espriella Poised for Second Place in Colombia’s 2026 First Round

Abelardo de la Espriella is on track to become one of the top finishers in Colombia’s presidential election first round, scheduled for May 31, 2026, with indications pointing to a second-place result among the field of candidates. Such an outcome would position him prominently in the national political landscape as voters decide whether the contest proceeds to a runoff.

Under Colombia’s electoral rules, a candidate must secure more than 50% of valid votes to win outright in the first round. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the top two vote-getters advance to a second round on June 21, 2026.
